A couple of weeks ago, we spent two nights at the lovely Macdonald Berystede Hotel and Spa in Ascot. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay—it felt wonderfully luxurious yet remained welcoming and suitable for families.
Here are our thoughts on this beautiful 4-star hotel:
Location
The Macdonald Berystede Hotel is ideally located near Ascot Racecourse and Legoland Windsor, which was perfect for us as we had plans to visit both over the weekend. Royal Ascot was just a five-minute drive away, and Legoland was about 15 minutes. Other nearby attractions include Royal Windsor Racecourse and Windsor Castle, so there’s no shortage of things to do in the area.
A Bit of History
The Berystede dates back to 1870 when it was originally built as a country estate for a wealthy young couple. Sadly, the original building was destroyed by fire in 1886 and remained abandoned for some time. In 1903, it re-emerged—not as a private home, but as a grand hotel. While it has changed ownership several times over the years, the Berystede has always maintained a strong connection with Royal Ascot.
The Room
The hotel offers 126 individually-styled luxury rooms. We stayed in a deluxe room that featured a double bed and two single beds for the kids. It also included a bathtub, TV, a spacious desk, and tea and coffee making facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms.
According to the hotel:
“The rooms at our stylish Berkshire hotel feature contemporary design, plush, soft furnishings, and luxury en-suite bathrooms. Thoughtful touches like air conditioning, satellite TV, and a well-stocked mini bar help make your stay that bit more comfortable.”
Dining
We had a fantastic three-course dinner at the hotel’s Acanthus Restaurant one evening. The food was absolutely delicious. Dinner is served from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm, and there’s also a children’s menu available.
The hotel describes it this way:
“Our newly refurbished Acanthus Restaurant appeals to those who appreciate a relaxed approach to award-winning dining. With banquet seating, a cosy snug perfect for private hire, and a stylish design, this is the place to eat in Ascot. Large windows overlooking the Royal Enclosure Patio flood the space with natural light.”
Breakfast the next morning was just as enjoyable, with a wide selection of pastries, cereals, hot breakfast items, and both hot and cold drinks.
Spa & Fitness
The hotel features its own spa and gym facilities, and we made full use of the indoor pool during our stay. Children are welcome to swim from 9–11 am and 4–7 pm. There’s also an outdoor hydrotherapy pool, which was amazing—I could’ve stayed in it all day!
Final Thoughts
We absolutely loved our stay at the Macdonald Berystede Hotel and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a family-friendly hotel in the Ascot area. The room was perfect, the amenities exceeded our expectations, and the outdoor areas and children’s options made it an ideal choice for families.
As for cost, we paid £292 for one night for two adults and two children. This included breakfast and a three-course dinner. Considering everything that was included—plus the hotel’s fantastic location and luxury feel—we found this to be great value for money.
