Back in summer, we visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a place we’ve been to a few times before and always thoroughly enjoy. If you’re local, it’s a fantastic destination for a family day out. While scrolling through my photos recently, I thought it would be a great time to share some highlights for anyone considering a visit.

Getting There

Located near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is easily accessible via the A1, M1, and M18. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Sheffield for us, making it a convenient alternative to Chester Zoo, which is over an hour and a half away.

About the Park

Built on the site of a former riding school and farm, the park has grown significantly since it opened in April 2009. Today, it is home to over 400 animals across more than 70 species.

Their mission speaks volumes:

“To create a dynamic, interactive experience and regional centre of excellence for the conservation of biodiversity globally and locally that is sustainable both for the environment and the business. To promote a wider understanding of the natural world and inspire generations to support and protect the world around them.”

What to See

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is especially famous for its polar bears, which are always a highlight for us. We also love watching the giraffes, lions, and tigers. Other incredible residents include rhinos, baboons, leopards, meerkats, giant otters, camels, ostriches, and many more.

Throughout the day, the park hosts various live shows, ranger talks, and feeding times — all fantastic opportunities to learn and engage. You can check the full timetable on their website.

Fun for Kids

With five children’s play areas—both indoor and outdoor—the park is great for little ones. Our kids especially enjoyed the Oasis Adventure Play Area, which features swings, slides, climbing frames, and even a zip line.

Facilities and Food

There are plenty of outdoor picnic spots as well as cafes, coffee shops, and restaurants. The indoor cafes can get busy around lunchtime, so if the weather is nice, I recommend bringing your own food to save money and avoid queues.

Tickets and Opening Times

The park is open daily from 10 am, except Christmas Day. Booking tickets online in advance is cheaper and highly recommended. Current online prices are:

  • Adult: £16.50

  • Child (3-15 years): £14.50

  • Under 3s: Free

For the latest ticket info, check their official website.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Yorkshire Wildlife Park offers a fantastic family day out. While it’s not the cheapest option, the price is in line with other UK wildlife attractions. If you take your time exploring and enjoy all the park has to offer, it’s definitely worth it.
